Precautions Before Tattoo Removal
Patients should generally:
- Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners before and after treatment
- Avoid treatment on:
- Active infections
- Open wounds
- Sunburned skin
- Suspicious lesions
- Inform the provider of:
- History of keloids or hypertrophic scarring
- Autoimmune or immune disorders
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Recent isotretinoin (Accutane) use
- Photosensitive medications
- Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis
- Understand that:
- Multiple sessions are required
- Complete removal cannot always be guaranteed
- Certain ink colors may respond poorly
- Cosmetic tattoos may darken temporarily due to pigment composition
Common Side Effects
Temporary effects after treatment may include:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Tenderness
- Whitening or “frosting” of the skin immediately after treatment
- Mild blistering
- Crusting or scabbing
- Itching
- Temporary pinpoint bleeding
Possible Risks and Complications
Less common but important risks include:
- Hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin)
- Hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin)
- Scarring
- Texture changes
- Infection
- Persistent redness
- Incomplete pigment removal
- “Ghosting” or residual tattoo shadow
- Allergic reaction to released tattoo pigments
- Paradoxical darkening of some pigments, especially white, flesh-toned, pink, or cosmetic inks
Rare but Important Considerations
- Some tattoo inks contain metals or compounds that may react unpredictably to laser energy
- Large tattoos may release pigment particles into the lymphatic system during breakdown
- Smokers and patients with impaired healing may have slower recovery
- Darker skin types carry higher risk for pigment alteration and require careful settings
