Common Precautions
Before treatment, patients should generally:
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least 2 weeks before and after treatment
- Avoid self-tanners or spray tans
- Shave the area 12–24 hours before treatment (unless instructed otherwise)
- Avoid waxing, plucking, threading, or epilating for several weeks prior, since the follicle must be intact
- Inform the provider of:
- Photosensitive medications
- Recent antibiotics
- Retinoid use
- History of keloids or poor wound healing
- Active skin infections or cold sores
- Pregnancy status
- Hormonal disorders
- Avoid treatment over:
- Active infections
- Open wounds
- Suspicious lesions or skin cancers
- Recent tattoos
- Severely irritated skin
Potential Side Effects
Common temporary effects may include:
- Redness
- Mild swelling around follicles
- Warmth or sensitivity
- Itching
- Temporary discomfort similar to a sunburn
Less common but possible risks include:
- Burns or blistering
- Hyperpigmentation (darkening)
- Hypopigmentation (lightening)
- Scabbing or crusting
- Bruising
- Acne-like eruptions
- Folliculitis
- Scarring (rare)
- Changes in skin texture (rare)
Rare but Important Risks
- Eye injury if proper protective eyewear is not used
- Paradoxical hypertrichosis (rare stimulation of hair growth)
- Reactivation of herpes simplex in susceptible individuals
